PREDICAMOS EN LA PRISIÓN

The Deputy seemed really worried about the matter, and afterward he treated us with every consideration. That was quite a change from the treatment when we arrived. Our experience with the Sunday school is an instance of that. Going to church was mandatory; you couldn't get out of it unless you were sick and had a doctor's excuse or a certificate. The Catholics went in at eight and they got through at nine. We went in at 9:15 or 9:30 and got through at l0:30.

Parece que al subdirector le preocupó mucho este asunto, y a partir de entonces nos trató con mucha consideración. Fue un gran cambio respecto al trato que recibimos al llegar. Nuestra experiencia con la escuela dominical es un ejemplo. Era obligatorio ir a la iglesia; solo podías librarte si estabas enfermo y el médico te extendía un justificante o un certificado. The Deputy told us when we first arrived there, "You men are in this prison for a long time. We are going to give you some work to do. Now, what can you do?" "Deputy," I answered, "I've never done anything in my life but preach. Have you got anything like that here?"
"No, sir! That's what you are in here for, and I tell you now you are not doing any preaching here."

El subdirector nos dijo cuando llegamos:
–Van a pasar mucho tiempo en esta prisión, así que vamos a darles trabajo que hacer. ¿Qué saben hacer ustedes? –Señor –respondí–, en toda mi vida no he hecho nada más que predicar. ¿Tiene aquí algún puesto de ese tipo?
– ¡Desde luego que no! Por eso es por lo que están aquí, y desde ahora les advierto que no van a predicar en esta cárcel.

That was in July. Toward fall, in September, they grouped up different ones into Sunday school classes. I was given a class of about fifteen Jewish men. Judge Rutherford had a class, and Giovanni De Cecca had an Italian class. Finally we each had a class. We were following the Quarterly Sunday school lessons and, strange to say, our lessons began with Abraham, the promises made to him and Isaac and Jacob — all the way down the line. Nothing could have been better for me to teach to a class of Jewish men.

Eso fue en julio. En el otoño, en septiembre, agruparon a las minorías en diferentes clases de la escuela dominical. Me encargaron un clase de unos quince judíos. El juez Rutherford también tenía una clase, y Giovanni DeCecca otra en italiano. One day I met the Deputy out on the field and he said, "Macmillan, those lessons you are having there are wonderful. I attend them all and I think that in time you will take all those Jews into the Promised Land. I'm hoping for that."

Un día me encontré con el subdirector en el patio y me dijo:
–Macmillan, esas clases que da son fabulosas. Asisto a ellas, y creo que con el tiempo llevará a todos esos judíos hasta la Tierra Prometida. Eso espero.

"Well," I said, "Deputy, when I came in here you told me I wasn't to do any preaching."
"Oh, forget that," he said.
The flu came long and our Sunday school was discontinued
for a time. But just before we left all the classes were united in honor of our leaving. We were going on Monday, and that Sunday Rutherford talked for about three-quarters of an hour to that group. We had a number of the officers in there and many of the men had tears running down their cheeks. They were deeply impressed. We left a little group in there that was organized to continue their study.

Le respondí:
–Señor, cuando llegué aquí, me dijo que nada de predicar.
–Bueno, olvídelo –replicó.
Poco después llegó la gripe, y nuestra escuela dominical se suspendió por un tiempo. Pero justo antes de irnos, todas las clases se unieron en un homenaje por nuestra partida. Nos marchábamos un lunes, y el domingo de la víspera Rutherford se dirigió al grupo durante tres cuartos de hora. Gran parte de los funcionarios estaban presentes, y a muchos hombres se les escaparon las lágrimas. Estaban conmovidos. Y dejamos allí un grupito organizado para continuar el estudio.
